Joint funding calls

Current UK-US joint funding calls

Comparative Cross-National Research Methods

The ESRC invites applications under this Initiative on Comparative Cross-National Research Methods. Several recent studies have identified a pressing need for the development of comparative cross-national research methods for the conduct of a high quality international and cross-national comparative research. This initiative is aimed at generating methodological advancement as well as advance understanding of the implementation of best practice.

Research methods form a basis for any social science research. Comparative cross-national research methods provide a foundation for a social and economic research conducted cross countries that becomes increasingly important in a globalized world. Therefore, research is needed urgently to identify the ways to ensure the continuous methodological development and to build a capacity in comparative cross-national research methods among researches in the UK and across the world.

Through this initiative the ESRC is seeking to fund four to six research projects which will address one or more substantive research questions upon which to base the methodological work. The areas of research are open to the applicants’ choice that they are expected to justify. Applicants may also wish to consider addressing broad methodological issues relevant to the comparative cross-national research, for example, conceptual equivalence, equivalence of variables, linguistic equivalence.

There is an expectation that all projects will contribute to ESRC’s broader initiative on improving and enhancing capacity in research methods as well as promoting more internationally focused research. The projects should comply with the ESRC’s policy on public access to research findings/outputs. This may be in the form of workshops or publications or may include the development of courses. The role of a Co-ordinator of the initiative is envisaged for the Co-ordination and harmonization of methodological advancement, training and capacity building, and dissemination activities across the projects. Principal applicants are invited to apply for the role of Co-ordinator.

Applications may also include funding for a research-linked studentship (+3 awards). The student must have a distinct, independent area of enquiry that will add value to the overall research objectives of the project. The case for a linked studentship will need to be set out in an additional section in the Je-S proposal. Studentships are not costed under fEC arrangements, but if awarded, the grant will meet the full 100% costs of the normal provision for these. Further information on applying for linked studentships can be found in the guidance notes attached Je-S applications protocols for ESRC.

Full proposals must be submitted to the ESRC by 4pm on Tuesday 25th August 2009.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted via the Joint Electronic Submission system (Je-S) and as such all applicants must be Je-S Registered. If you are not currently Je-S Registered, and intend to apply, please ensure that you allow sufficient time for registration as no extensions to the deadline will be permitted. Hard-copy, faxed or email applications will not be accepted. Please note that the Je-S application form will be available from 6 May 2009.

Further Information

Please refer to the Guidance Notes (PDF) when completing the Je-S application form. For further information on the Initiative please refer to the Specification for Comparative Cross-National Research Methods (PDF).

All submitted proposals will in the first instance be assessed by an international panel of referees. Applicants will have the opportunity to respond to referee comments in the week commencing 12th October 2009.

It is anticipated that applicants will be notified of the outcomes of their applications during December 2009. Project duration should be no longer than 48 months. It is expected that successful projects will commence from 1 April 2010.
