On 12 February, 1809, Charles Robert Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. As an aspiring geologist, he circumnavigated the globe aboard the HMS Beagle from 1831 to 1836. While on this journey, he visited the Galapagos Islands in the South Pacific and here uncovered many pieces of the theory he would later publish in The Origin of Species. Published in 1859, The Origin of Species brought the theory of evolution into the cultural mainstream and remains today a pillar for knowledge and new discoveries in evolutionary biology.

In 2009, we celebrate both the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species. Below find a list of links providing information on events in the UK and US celebrating Charles Darwin in 2009.
