What should I do with the passport of someone who has died?

We request that the passport of a British national who has died is forwarded to the  North America Passport Production Centre, at the families earliest convenience, for cancellation.

 Documents required:

  • please complete the attached D1 application form
  • please forward the passport of the deceased
  • please forward the original US State issued death certificate
  • please include a fee of $15 to cover the cost of returning the document to you  (see fees)
You can also register the death through the Consular section in Washington DC, if the death occurred in the United States.  For more information, see registering a death.
