Emergency travel documents

We recognise that there will be times when a passport has been lost or stolen and that there is insufficient time to replace the passport before travelling.  In some circumstances we may be able to issue an emergency travel document.  Before we can consider this option the following criteria generally apply:

  • The lost or stolen passport must not have expired
  • You intend to travel within the next five working days
  • You can demonstrate a genuine reason for wanting to travel urgently
Please contact your nearest consular office to discuss your situation:

If you are in the USA

If you are in Canada

Please note:  there will be a charge for an Emergency travel document (consular fee 16 on our commonly requested fees)

In addition, if a Consular Officer has to attend the office out of normal working hours then an hourly fee of $192 will be charged up to a maximum of $1383 in any 24 hour period,  for each consular officer.
