Our Ambassador

Nigel Sheinwald

Ambassador Nigel Sheinwald

Welcome to UKinUSA, the official website of the UK Government in the US. I have been the British Ambassador in the US since October 2007. It is a privilege to work here and to contribute to the extraordinarily diverse relationship between our two peoples.

The United Kingdom and the United States have an incomparable relationship. Our shared language, shared values of freedom and democracy, and shared political and judicial systems are the bedrock of the “special relationship.”

Trade and Investment links between the UK and USA are very strong. The UK is the number one foreign investor in the United States, with more than $300 billion in investments.

British forces work alongside US colleagues on operations around the world. Currently there are nearly 8,000 UK troops, alongside US and NATO counterparts, helping to build the security conditions in which reconstruction and development in Afghanistan can take place. In Iraq, 4,000 troops are involved in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM alongside US troops. Through our membership of NATO, G8 and the UN, we work with the US on the global challenges of climate change, sustainable development, and terrorism to make the world a better, safer place for all.

The US and UK enjoy impressive two-way exchanges in tourism and education. More than 4.5 million UK nationals visit the US for business and tourism each year, spending approximately $14 billion. US tourism to the UK stands around 3 million, spending $10 billion.

40,000 US students study in the UK each year. In addition, the UK awards approximately 40 Marshall Scholarships annually. The Marshall Scholarship programme was created by the UK Government to thank the US for its post-WWII Marshall Plan. There are approximately 1,500 Marshall Scholar alumni located across the United States and throughout the world.

Not only does this website provide information about how the UK Government works in the United States but it also provides easy access to information about all aspects of the UK and the British Government's policies, our help for British nationals and businesses, our offices around the United States, answers to frequently asked questions, and more. If there is something you do not find, please let us know and we will try to help you.

I hope you enjoy visiting our site,

Sir Nigel Sheinwald
Ambassador
