Welcome message

The British Consulate-General in Los Angeles covers Southern California, Clark County Nevada, the states of Arizona, Hawaii and Utah, and the islands of American Samoa. We have had consular representation here since the nineteenth century, and British ties with the region are deep and extensive.

On July 27, 2009 the Consulate-General will welcome a new Consul-General, Dame Barbara Hay.  Please visit our website again soon to learn more information about the new Consul-General.

Much of the history of Los Angeles is a history of British innovators, from Charlie Chaplin to Raymond Chandler to the architect John Parkinson. Hawaii has the Captain Cook monument on the Big Island and the Union Jack as part of its state flag, testifying to old British connections there.

Today UK companies are the largest foreign investors in California, Utah and Arizona (and the largest in the United States as a whole employing about a million Americans). Hundreds of thousands of British nationals live in this region, and hundreds of thousands visit every year.

In the other direction, many American companies are investing in the UK, which is a strong market for American goods and services and the most effective gateway into the 500 million person European market, the world's largest. The UK is proving ever more popular to American students, both for study abroad programs and for full degree courses. And Britain is always a great tourist destination, whether you want castles, golf, art, music, street culture or restaurants offering every cuisine in the world.

Whether you want to go to the UK for work, study or leisure, or if you just want to read more about the UK, this website and its numerous links are designed just for you. I hope you enjoy it. And if you want to know about upcoming British events in Southern California, please take a look at the BritWeek site.
