History of our Consulate General
The British Vice-Consulate was opened in Galveston in 1842, along what is now commonly known as The Strand.
In August 1938, it was decided that Houston needed a British Consulate as it had fast become the largest city in Texas, with a population of 400,000. Due to the growth in importance of Houston as an oil and cotton port, it was felt that there would be increased opportunities for British Trade.
Offices were rented in the Cotton Exchange Building for an annual rent of $1240, and the new British Consulate opened 19th October 1939.
