Disabled access
The Foreign & Commonwealth Office and the British Consulate Denver are keen to ensure that their buildings and services are fully accessible to disabled members of the public. Wherever possible, we have made our buildings and services accessible. Sometimes however, this is not possible due to security or other restrictions. In these situations we will endeavour to provide a service or access to a building in an alternative way to ensure equality of access for disabled people. To assist disabled visitors, we have set out below details of disabled access at this Consulate.
General Physical Access
Primary disabled access is available through either the Broadway or 16th Street entrances, both of which lead into the lobby where the elevators are located. Access at this level is free of stairways or steps. Visitors should take the elevator to the 10th floor. Visitors who need special assistance should notify the Security Guard in the lobby or the Consulate. All floor coverings within the building are safe and even. There is a ramp from the stairwell exit out on to the street. The lobby doors are accessible to all users. The door to the consular office is not automated but is wheelchair accessible with assistance.
Bathroom Facilities
The British Consulate does not have bathroom facilities wthin our office but there are facilities available within the building. The nearest facilities accessible to wheelchair-users, or those with limited physical mobility, are located on the 10th floor just down the hall from our office.
Parking
The British Consulate is located in Tower One of the World Trade Center. The World Trade Center does not offer public parking facilities. The nearest suitable public parking facilities for wheelchair and disabled access are located at a pay parking lot on the corner of Broadway and 18th or in the Denver Pavilions, the entrance to which is located on Welton Street, between 15th and 16th Streets.
Emergency/Evacuation Procedures
In the event of an emergency or evacuation of the office, the World Trade Center has nominated floor wardens for each office who will help disabled persons to a place of refuge, which is normally the stairwell where handrails are available. The Denver Fire Department is responsible for assisting with the evacuation of disabled persons. All emergency signs within the World Trade Centre are readable in Braille. An audible alarm will sound to notify visually-impaired staff or visitors of the evacuation. Strobe lights are activated to notify deaf or hard of hearing staff/visitors of an evacuation.
Telephone facilities
There is a public telephone available for use in the Consulate.
Access for Visually-Impaired Visitors
Guide dogs are welcome within the World Trade Center and the Consulate office.
Access for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Visitors
Unfortunately, the British Consulate does not offer hearing loops, minicom/textphones, sign language or signing interpretation facilities.
