Upcoming events in the New England area

On 5 November, the British Consul General and British Airways will co-host a Bonfire Night Fundraiser for the British Charitable Society (BCS) at the British Residence on Beacon Hill.  (This event is for members of the BCS, their guests and personal invitees of the Consul General only.)  The British Charitable Society provides short-term charitable relief to 'Brits' (ie persons holding a British passport) or those of recent 'British-American' heritage (ie their dependants) who are resident in the six New England states.  For more information on the British Charitable Society, how to become a member or how to apply for such charitable relief, please click here.

7 November 2009: Join the Pepperrell Project and co-hosts to celebrate "A Very Pepperrell Affair," honouring the lives of British colonialists Col. William Pepperrell and his son, Sir William Pepperrell.  The ceremony and re-enactment begin at noon at the site of the Pepperrell Tomb and Cemetery, located off Pepperrell Road (Rt.103) across from Frisbee’s Market in Kittery Point, ME.  For more information, contact Steve Estes at 207-439-3479.

7-15 November 2009: The Boston Jewish Film Festival features three British Films: "Broken Lines" (starring Paul Bettany), "Sidney Turtlebaum," and "Within the Whirlwind."   "Broken Lines" director Sallie Aprahamian will attend showings of the film on 7 and 8 November.  For more information, visit The Boston Jewish Film Festival website.

8 November 2009:
Join British and Commonwealth organizations in the Boston area at this year's Remembrance Day Service at Old North Church (193 Salem Street, Boston). The Service will begin at 10:55am, with the traditional two minute silence to be observed at 11:00am. A short reception will follow. Parking is available at the North End Parking Garage, 600 Commercial Street, one block away from the church up to I p.m. for $3.00, provided your parking ticket is stamped by an usher at the church.  The nearest T station is Haymarket.

12-15 November: British galleries participate in the Boston International Fine Art Show: Gladwell and Company will show 19th and 20th century paintings, and Ransom Gallery will exclusively show paintings of contemporary Irish artist Tim Woolcock.  For more information, please visit FineArtBoston

Recent events

On October 14, 2009, Simon Shercliff, First Secretary at the British Embassy in Washington with responsibility for Afghanistan and Pakistan, and Hassan Abbas, a Senior Adviser to Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center and a former Pakistani government official, met to discuss the complexities of Pakistan's relationship with its neighbors, and to explore the UK Government's commitment to Pakistan and the region at large. The British Consulate hosted BABCNE's Financial Services Speaker Series: "The Past, Present and Future of Capital Markets," breakfast forum featuring J. Phillip Clark, Founder, Epoch on October 1.

The Consul General joined New Hampshire Governor John Lynch for the opening of the Highland Games in Lincoln, New Hampshire. Read more about his visit here.

The British Consulate General Boston, UK Trade & Investment and ThinkLondon hosted an invitation only reception and dinner to discuss the business opportunities in London around the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. Consul General Phil Budden, City of London, and UK Trade & Investment hosted a private dinner with City of London Corporation's Policy Chairman, Stuart Fraser on September 16.

Sarah Brown, wife of Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Shaun Woodward, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, and Martin McGuinness, deputy First Minister for Northern Ireland visited Boston to pay their respects to the late Senator Edward M Kennedy. Read about their visit here.

British Consulate partnered with Northeastern University for a speech by the British Foreign Office Minister, Mr Bill Rammell on 5 May 2009. 
The British Foreign Office Minister, Mr Bill Rammell, spoke on "The Middle East Peace Process" at Northeastern University on 5 May 2009 as part of a three-day visit to the US that included stops in Washington and Boston. The British Consulate General Boston was a stop on the 2009 North American Campaign events for alumni and friends of the University of Oxford on April 23, 2009.
