Nick Bridge, Counsellor for Global Issues

Nick was appointed Counsellor for Global Issues at the British Embassy in Washington DC in September 2008. His Global Issues Group works on a range of policy issues including trade, energy, climate, agriculture, business affairs, science, technology and innovation. Nick also oversees the UK government’s US network of science/innovation officers and climate/energy officers. He is non-executive director of the British American Business Association (BABA).

Between 2005 and 2008 Nick was Deputy Chief Economist then Chief Economist at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. His responsibilities included provision of economic advice and analysis related to foreign policy to the Foreign Secretary and Board of Management; management of the G8 and OECD policy teams; policy lead on globalisation issues; and leadership of the government’s network of economic attaches around the world. He was also a co-author of “Global Europe”, which outlined the UK government’s vision for the EU at the beginning of the 21st century.

Nick worked at HM Treasury during the 2005 UK Presidency of the G8 and EU, where he jointly led a team that negotiated a $4 billion global immunisation financing programme launched by several governments at the end of 2005 with the aim of saving over 5 million lives.

From 1997 to 2004 Nick had diplomatic postings to Japan and China working on economic and financial issues including the Asian Financial Crisis, the Japanese bank crisis, and China’s emergence as a global economic power.

He was previously an economist in the UK Ministry of Agriculture working on EU Common Agricultural Policy reform and the BSE crisis.

Nick has been a member of the UK Government Economic Service since 1994, and speaks a functional level of Mandarin and Japanese.
