Prime Minister Gordon Brown Announces Revolution in Sport (June 06, 2008)
Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced a raft of initiatives that will bring more sport to more people and help make make the UK a world-leading sporting nation.
Following a meeting in Downing Street, the government revealed measures in its $275 million Legacy Action Plan that include:
- providing free swimming to all over-60's with a view to providing free swimming for all by 2012;
- getting 2 million people more active by 2012 through the new Sport England strategy; and
- overhauling the way that Sport England invests in sport through new relationships with national governing bodies to increase participation.
The meeting was attended by Sports Secretary Andy Burnham and Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell as well as representatives from sporting and health bodies such as the FA, Lawn Tennis Association, Cycling England and the National Heart Forum.
Also at the event was Tom Daley, Britain's 14-year-old European diving champion. The prime minister chatted with Tom and his parents about his experiences and his hopes for this year's Beijing Olympics where he will compete in the men's 10m board event.
