Sir Alan Collins at the commissioning of the USS New York (November 09, 2009)
Sir Alan Collins, British Consul General in New York, represented the United Kingdom at the commissioning of the USS New York on November 7, 2009
The commissioning welcomed the ship into the US fleet and honoured the memory of the victims of 9/11. The bow of the USS New York was constructed using steel salvaged from the World Trade Center.
Sir Alan said: "It is an honour to witness the commissioning of the USS New York, a ship that will play an important role in keeping the United States and her allies safe from future terrorist attacks. British and American armed forces are serving together in Afghanistan. Prime Minister Gordon Brown has re-affirmed our commitment to this mission, the "first line in our defences" against terrorist attacks."
The ship can be toured by the public through November 11, 2009. It is docked alongside Pier 88 (48th Street and 12th Avenue) near the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum. Please visit the USS New York website for more information.
