Ambassador hosts Trafalgar Night (October 23, 2009)
British Ambassador Nigel Sheinwald hosted a dinner at his Residence to commemorate the 204th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar on 22 October.
The event also marked the continuing partnership between the British Royal Navy and the US Navy in global maritime security.
The decisive sea battle between the British Royal Navy and those of France and Spain confirmed Britain’s naval supremacy in the 19th century. Admiral Nelson’s unorthodox naval tactics proved successful against the enemy’s larger fleet. A monument to Admiral Nelson, who perished during the battle, stands in London's Trafalgar Square.
Ambassador Sheinwald said:
"As we celebrate this strategic victory that changed UK’s future, and honour the British national hero who was mortally wounded in that battle, we also acknowledge the impact that this triumph on the seas had on the shaping of Europe, the new United States, and the rest of the world".
Guests from the administration, military and defence communities were treated to music from the Royal Marine Band and Wind Quartet and took part in the evening's traditional toast: "The Immortal Memory of Admiral Lord Nelson."
