Ambassador talks foreign policy on NPR station in Southern California (September 30, 2009)
Yesterday, Ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald discussed current foreign policy issues with Patt Morrison on KPCC-FM 89.3. The Ambassador highlighted some key points from the recent Pittsburgh Summit of G-20 leaders.
"I was in Pittsburgh, with the British delegation last week, and the agreement which emerged was indeed that we need to work - really for the first time internationally - on a new framework for dealing with both the economic challenges ahead and to clean up and reform the world’s financial system. There’s already quite a lot of regulatory cooperation between the European Union and the different bodies here in the United States, but this needs to be taken to a new level. We want the International Monetary Fund to be much more involved in looking at the big economies - the economies of the G-20 - and offering us advice on how we’re getting on when we assess on medium–term economic plans. We want fledging bodies; we’ve got a new thing called the Financial Stability Board, which includes all the 20 countries. They are going to have a role in all the areas of financial regulation including looking at banker’s pay and compensation."
