Global recovery begins with trade (September 29, 2009)
Ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald stressed the great importance of the trade connections between the UK and Southern California and the continuation of global free trade to the overall economic recovery in an opinion article published today in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
"With open borders and free flows of trade and finance, we can together make a real difference to the pace and sustainability of the economic upturn. But we cannot be complacent about the dangers that the siren calls of protectionists pose to this, especially in difficult economic times. We must be vigilant about defending free trade, ensuring new barriers to trade or investment are not erected. The G-20 has signed up to commitments not to retreat into protectionism. But the recent reports from the World Trade Organization and others are cause for concern, with G-20 countries violating their ‘no protectionism’ pledge on average every three days."
