Prime Minister urges Iran to show that elections were fair (June 19, 2009)
The Prime Minister has said it is up to Iran to show the world that elections have been conducted fairly.
Gordon Brown said only the Iranian people could decide their new leader through the process of elections.
But he said Iran must show that the brutality witnessed over the past few days will not be repeated.
He said the UK condemned the use of violence and media suppression in Iran following the election last week.
“The eyes of the world are upon Iran at the moment. We want Iran to be part of the international community and not to be isolated but it is for Iran to prove, not just to Britain but to the whole of the world and to their own people, that they can respect these basic rights.”
Gordon Brown said the UK would like to build a strong relationship with Iran but that doing so depended on Iran’s response to the current situation.
