Statement on situation in Somalia (May 15, 2009)
Minister for Africa, Lord Malloch-Brown, has expressed 'deep concern' over reports of serious fighting in Mogadishu.
Speaking about the situation in Somalia on Friday 15 May, he said:
"I am deeply concerned by the reports of serious fighting in Mogadishu in the last week. The attempted coup d'etat by forces opposed to the Transitional Federal Government is very serious, and an assult on the internationally recognised government that has worked hard for peace and reconcilliation in Somalia.
The deteriorating humanitarian situation is of particular concern. I call on all parties in Somalia to work together toward a stable future for the population of Somalia as a whole."
