Progress towards peace in Darfur (May 07, 2009)
Foreign Office Minister, Lord Malloch-Brown, has commented on recent steps to re-establish progress towards peace in Darfur and to normalise relations between Sudan and Chad.
Lord Malloch-Brown said:
"The United Kingdom welcomes recent steps to re-establish progress towards peace in Darfur and to normalise relations between Sudan and Chad.
The resumption of talks in Doha on 6 May with the Government of Sudan and the Justice and Equality movement, led by Djibril Bassole in partnership with Qatar, is a positive development. We urge both sides to show flexibility on the outstanding issues and to make concrete proposals for peace in Darfur.
The United Kingdom underlines the urgency of progress in separate UN-led dialogue with the Government of Sudan to ensure effective humanitarian capacity to meet the needs of the people of Sudan in Darfur and elsewhere.
We also welcome the 3 May Doha Accord on normalising relations between Sudan and Chad, and urge all parties to do everything possible for its effective implementation. In this context we are concerned by reports of further fighting in eastern Chad, and urge all concerned to cease violence immediately.
The United Kingdom will continue to work with all sides to address wider challenges in Sudan, in particular further implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, and for progress on justice and reconciliation in Sudan and the wider region."
