British Embassy gives thanks, helps homeless (December 08, 2008)
On 25 November, Staff from the Embassy partnered with the Community Council for the Homeless at Friendship Place (CCHFP) for an afternoon of volunteering at their group home for women – Veronica House in northwest Washington, DC.
CCHFP prides itself on being “built on the foundation of creative partnerships with other local nonprofits. [They] collaborate to provide the best homeless services in the region.” They host the only clinic in upper northwest D.C. where a homeless person can see a doctor, nurse or psychiatrist without an appointment, for free. Along with the clinic CCFHP also hosts and maintains four shelters, two homes, and seventeen efficiency apartments.
Embassy staff presented CCHFP with two baskets containing donated toiletries, non-perishable food items and Thanksgiving Turkeys. Staff then spent the afternoon at Veronica House completing household chores, which included everything from washing windows and mopping floors to assembling computers and raking leaves. The Embassy will continue to foster the relationship with CCHFP throughout the year with planned food and clothing drives.
