Civil partnerships

If you would like to deposit your US Marriage/Civil partnership certificate with the General Register’s Office in the United Kingdom, you may do so through the Consular section in Washington.  A condition is that one party must be a British citizen- and only that person can apply to deposit the details.

You can opt to arrange to create a record of your overseas marriage/civil partnership at any time after it has taken place.  However, we only accept original documents or certified copies issued by the relevant states Vital Statistics Office.

Once the documents have been deposited, the General Registry Office (GRO) will send you a letter confirming receipt of the application.  From this point on, the GRO can issue certified copies of the documents that saves you having to contact the overseas authority in question.

Documents required:

• ORIGINAL state issued marriage certificate (or certified copy from the Vital Statistics Office.
• A copy of your spouse/civil partner’s passport details page
