The Defence Materiel staff under Patrick Turner, Minister (Defence Materiel) are responsible for supporting all aspects of the UK/US defence equipment acquisition policy and process. This covers setting out the military requirements, procuring and supporting Defence equipment, and finally disposing of it in a safe and efficient manner.

In the US the Defence Materiel Staff are involved in all stages of acquisition – from the earliest stages of setting up collaborative science and technology programmes to developing new concepts that can be utilised to support joint defence capabilities; helping the UK Central Customer Organisation and US Services develop harmonised operational requirements; and supporting a wide range of US/UK defence equipment and defence industrial business, including: liaising with industry on both sides of the Atlantic; placing contracts for US equipment for the UK Armed Forces; and supporting the sale of UK equipment to fulfill the requirements of the US Services.

BDS-US supports the MOD’s Equipment Capability Customer (ECC) in its role as the central customer for the acquisition of new military capability.
